If you’re anything like me, you may enjoy learning new things. In 2022 I wanted to learn how to make sourdough bread. I made my own sourdough starter, spent hours searching for recipes to try, then adjusting those recipes to my taste or even making a few of my very own! I wanted to share my top 10 favorite sourdough recipes we make here at our home regularly. If you are looking for more ways to use your sourdough starter, you may find one that will become a go-to recipe in your kitchen. This list is compiled of both discard and active starter ideas.
10. Pie Crust
My family has a pie competition every year at Thanksgiving, and this pie crust helped me take the win. With this discard recipe, I got a few compliments on the crust alone. While I’ve only used this recipe in sweet pies so far, I already have plans to use this recipe in a savory meal.

9. Crackers
Since I have tried this recipe for the first time, I have stopped buying crackers at the store. This easy and delicious discard recipe is a regular in our kitchen. I love making these crackers to pair with meat and cheese, for eating chicken or tuna salad, adding to a charcuterie plate, or just a plain ole snack for the kids.

8. Biscuits
I have had a love/hate relationship with trying to get down the perfect sourdough discard biscuits. A previous recipe I used NEVER seemed to turn out. I told myself to not give up and try the recipe a few more times because I know biscuits can be more difficult to make. The previous recipe tasted fine, but my issue was they always looked terrible. At my first go with this recipe, they turned out great! This is now my go to recipe for biscuits. I use them for biscuits and gravy and deconstructed chicken pot pie.

7. Pretzel Bites
These pretzel bites are very delicious. My favorite time to make these is on Sundays to eat while watching football. This recipe does take active starter, so you will need to plan a bit in advance before making this delicious treat. We dip our pretzels in butter or cheese and sometimes top with a cinnamon and sugar mix.

6. Banana Bread
Banana bread is one of my favorite snacks of all time. It is so tasty, and I love that I can use discard whenever I make it now! This bread never seems to last more than 3 days at our house.

5. Cinnamon Rolls
I know I might sound crazy saying this, but I have never been a huge cinnamon roll fan, until now! These rolls are so incredible. I personally enjoy them without any frosting because I find the frosting on any cinnamon rolls makes them too sweet. These are now a Christmas morning must here at our house. They are probably my husband’s favorite sourdough recipe of mine, as he is often requesting I make them.

4. Bagels
This recipe is the very first recipe I ever made with active sourdough starter. This recipe is a great beginner recipe, and we now eat bagels so much more often than we used to. If you have never tried this recipe, I would absolutely recommend it. We generally eat our bagels sliced, toasted, and with a topping, but they are also great for breakfast sandwiches!

3. Banana Pancakes
This recipe is the first recipe I created with my sourdough discard. I absolutely love banana pancakes, and I had seen a ton of discard pancake recipes online. I of course went through a testing period to get these just right. They are fluffy and taste great! I also prefer simple recipes, and with this you mix everything up in a single bowl. We enjoy these pancakes almost every Saturday, and they are great for making extra to have as breakfast through the week.
2. Tortillas
Taco Tuesday anyone? Sourdough discard tortillas are made at least weekly here! They are oh so tasty and very easy! We of course make them on taco night, but we also enjoy using this recipe for enchiladas, slicing up to dip into hummus, or adding to a charcuterie plate. Doubling this recipe and putting the left overs in the fridge to use for breakfast burritos the rest of the week is always a great choice!

1. Artisan Bread Loaf
This is our all-time favorite sourdough item to have on hand in our home. I make this style of bread 2 or 3 times per week, and I also gifted it to family and friends over the holidays. This was the first artisan bread loaf recipe I successfully baked. I had tried at least other 5 recipes before this one, and something always seemed to go wrong. I was delighted when I finally tried this recipe and had success!
